At South, we know that when students are involved in a club, activity, or athletic program, their level of engagement with school increases as well as their overall enjoyment of school.

There's a lot to choose from, so get involved! And if there isn't a club or activity that you see that we should have, fill out a request to add it to our options!

Brain Bowl

Brain Bowl for middle school is a Southern Oregon University Pre-College Youth Program. In the spring of 2020, there were 21 different middle school teams participating in three (3) divisions across both Jackson and Josephine counties. Middle School Brain Bowl competition involves students in grades 6 to 8 in weekly games similar to athletic competitions offered at this level. Questions are designed to be more challenging as each week passes. By the end, these teams are successfully responding to high school level challenges.

South Middle School has historic success with Brain Bowl, taking 1st place the last two years! Competitions traditionally take place from January through March.

Robotics Club

Robotics includes the development of 21st century skills: teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, project management, and communication skills. Have fun igniting your curiosity as you work on a team to engineer and program with others to prepare for our annual competition. We compete against teams from other schools in Southern Oregon.

Running Club

Whatever your goals may be, Running Club offers a great way to get a workout in and stay active. You can achieve your running and fitness goals while finding a great social network in a supportive environment. Join runners from the Cross Country (XC) team and Track & Field (T&F) team to hone your running skills. Whether you are a beginner looking to get some exercise and join a great group of people or an experienced runner, Running Club is a great choice to get connected! Running Club will begin in January and end in March. The club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Scavenger Hunt

The middle school State of Jefferson Scavenger Hunt is a quality competitive event promoting intellectual curiosity and academic skill. It is developed and hosted by the Southern Oregon University Pre-College Youth Programs, schools and districts in Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath countries. (*The title State of Jefferson has been applied to these competitions for nearly 40 years and is used to denote the general geographical region that participants come from. There is not now, nor has there ever been, a political affiliation or intent attached to that title.)

Goals of the Middle School Scavenger Hunt:

To increase knowledge of how to access and critically analyze sources of information;
To encourage team work in an academic area, and reward intellectual curiosity;
To offer experience in constructing persuasive arguments with supporting evidence;
To emphasize the importance of organization, documentation, and precision;
To promote civil discourse and respectful argumentation skills.

Theatre Club

South Middle School Theatre Club is a student-led club that performs up to two plays each year. Students audition for plays in the fall and spring and perform volunteer service hours within the Grants Pass theatre community. Members of the SMS theatre club who earn 50 volunteer service hours can be inducted into the Junior International Thespian Society in the spring. Students also have an opportunity to attend local theatre productions while they are in the rehearsal process. Our partners include: Grants Pass High School Theatre, Barnstormers Theatre, and One Eleven Theatre Company.

Our club motto: “Act well your part; there all the honor lies.”

The club runs August through May with rehearsals Monday-Thursday after school.

Trojan Follies

Trojan Follies is a highlight in the school year! For over 60 years, South Middle School has hosted "Trojan Follies" - our version of a school talent show. Typically, the money raised from our evening event is put toward a scholarship for Grants Pass High School graduates that attended South Middle School as they pursue their post-secondary aspirations.

Interested in showing off your talent? Stay tuned in the spring-time for opportunities to host, perform, and participate in a number of behind-the-scenes areas (decorations, stage directions, costumes, etc.) to help out!

Trojan Follies 2020

Video Game Club

Gaming club is an opportunity for students to socialize and have fun together based on their hobby of playing video games. Students will have an opportunity to play multi and single player games, and spend time discussing gaming strategies and preferences. Students may bring their own devices if they would like, but they need to remain in their lockers until the end of the school day when the club begins. We will have chromebooks available for students to use.

Unidos por el Objetivo - United by Goals

In this club kids will practice skills that promote resilience, empathy, goal setting, community service, openness to other cultures, diversity and Inclusion. Examples are; students will support school projects, create a welcoming environment for international students and locals, and explore diversity projects they are interested in.
